A. RTI for Language: Tackling the Language Roots of
Reading Comprehension, Linda Liss-Bronstein
Response to Intervention holds promise to address the underlying
language difficulties that impede students understanding of text. This
presentation will focus on the systematic and explicit teaching of
narrative and expository discourse skills necessary for text comprehension
and academic success. This approach includes teaching ‘story grammar’
and ‘literate language’ text features that are essential for understanding
both narrative and informational text. Reading comprehension strategies
will be examined with a language lens. RTI protocols for language
intervention, including progress-monitoring assessments, that have
improved reading achievement with diverse student populations, will be
presented. Videos demonstrating intervention strategies in action with
primary and elementary students will be shared.
